In December 2021, the government made an agreement with mobile network operators that 3G services would be phased out by 2033. The networks affected include Vodafone, EE, O2 and Three.

Vodafone are gradually phasing out its 3G coverage in the UK this year, replacing it with 4G and 5G. Why? The switch-off allows 3G frequencies to be used for faster, more efficient 4G and 5G services. Of course, 2G will remain for calls and texts.

The Vodafone 3G switch-off began in February 2023, with pilots across Plymouth and Basingstoke. Based on the success of these pilot programmes, Vodafone have announced its plans to start switching off the remainder of their UK 3G network from June 2023.

Other mobile providers are waiting until next year to start their switch-off: EE plans to start in early 2024, and Three and O2 expect to switch off by the end of 2024.

What does this mean for you?

Older devices will become functionally useless when the 3G switch-off is complete. The devices will still power on, but they won’t be able to connect to a network.
